The Chestnut Hill Beer Garden: Market at the Fareway

Jun 30, 2017 | Commercial Projects, Design Portfolio

There is something undefinable about the way an environment can soothe the soul and induce relaxation. The Chestnut Hill Beer Garden was designed to do just that. Enter through the garden door; a stunning antique from India and find the loveliness nestled in front of the Market at the Fareway in my very own beloved village neighborhood of Philadelphia; Chestnut Hill. Our love of organic materials, whimsical lighting, vintage objects and sustainability serve to soften some of the more rugged materials and rigid lines. The overhead structure with varying heights has been devised out of reclaimed barn beams and articulated with string lights and up-cycled light fixtures. The perimeter “wall” element defines the space for the garden, but the transparency mitigates the feeling of being closed in. Beautiful urns and Turkish pots with lush plantings, and other curated flea market finds enhance the space and add layers of interest. The juxtaposition of Corten steel, wood with a patina only achieved by the passing of time and lush plantings create the desired balance. There are two long communal tables constructed of reclaimed barn wood flanked by red antique chairs from France. More intimate seating in the form of lounging areas are situated under clusters of dramatic chandeliers. We created the lounge furniture by merging found items with newly built components to create love seats and sofas. The Brewery has concrete bar top with bar stools, along with high top tables that we created out of reclaimed wood. The Garden ambiance transforms as the light filtering through the space evolves as the day goes by. A true neighborhood destination where everybody knows your name!
